Medals of the President of Gdańsk awarded

For the second time at the Amberif Fashion and Amber Gala, the Gdańsk Mayor's Medals for promoting Gdańsk – the Amber World Capital were awarded. The recipients were: Elżbieta Sontag, Sławomir Fijałkowski, Janusz Pawlik, Dobrochna Walkiewicz, Wanda Gontarska, Eugeniusz Galimski and Igor Mitroczuk.

Medals were awarded to:

Dr Elżbieta Sontag

Manager of the Museum of Amber Inclusions at the University of Gdańsk, member of the International Amber Association, Amber Person of the Year 2007. On a daily basis, she works in the Department of Invertebrate Zoology at the University of Gdańsk. She defended her doctoral dissertation titled „Co-occurrence of inclusions in Baltic amber,” under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Hab. Ryszard Szadziewski, President of the World Amber Council. For many years, she has been popularising knowledge about Baltic amber, inclusions, and Gdańsk – the World Amber Capital.

Dr Sławomir Fijałkowski

Head of the Jewellery Design Studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, a long-standing member of the International Amber Association. Amber Craftsman of the Year 2009, author of the album „Top Amber” and the publication „Trendbook 2011+”, which was created at the initiative of the Mayor's Office for City Promotion. One of Poland's leading design specialists. For many years, he has been the curator of international design competitions, including, among others, the Amberif Design Award. It can be safely stated that his work has helped introduce amber into European design.

Janusz Pawlik

Long-serving Vice-president of the National Chamber of Amber Economy. He actively helped and financially supported the organisation of the first two editions of the international amber workshops in Gdańsk.

Dobrochna Walkiewicz

A doctoral student at the University of Gdańsk. For 14 years, she has participated as a model in successive editions of the Fashion and Amber Gala, thanks to which she has become one of the symbols of this event. For many years, she has also participated in jewellery and amber fashion shows organised during St. Dominic's Fair, as well as in presentations of amber companies. She successfully balances her work as a model with her scientific activities, including, for several years, research into amber deposits in the Gdańsk Bay area.

Wanda Gontarska

For over 20 years, the organiser of the Złoto Srebro Czas (Gold Silver Time) jewellery and watch fairs in Warsaw. A friend of Gdańsk and a promoter of the activities of the World Amber Council and Gdańsk – The Amber World Capital. Although the main focus of these fairs is the presentation of gold and silver jewellery manufacturers, for over a decade they have also featured museum exhibitions promoting Baltic amber and Gdańsk – The Amber World Capital. In 2007, during these fairs, the President of Gdańsk, Paweł Adamowicz, nominated Ms Lidia Popiel as the First Amber Ambassador. The fairs were a partner in this project in the years 2007–2009. In 2008, during the ceremonial opening of the fairs, the President of Gdańsk, Paweł Adamowicz, was honoured by exhibitors and the Programme Council with the Amber Pen Amber Rex for his contribution to the promotion of Baltic amber. During last year's edition of the fairs, the Minister of Economy Award Chapter recognised the promotional campaign „Amber Passport”.

Eugeniusz Galimski

Chairman of the Management Board of the International Trade Centre – a company that has been organising the Złoto Srebro Czas jewellery and watch fair in Warsaw for 12 years. Together with Dr Sławomir Fijałkowski from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, he co-created the statuette for the Minister of Economy Award (a silver eagle in an amber crown). A friend of Gdańsk and a promoter of the activities of the World Amber Council and Gdańsk – the Amber World Capital. Although the main focus of these fairs is the presentation of gold and silver jewellery manufacturers, for over a decade they have also featured museum exhibitions promoting Baltic amber and Gdańsk – the Amber World Capital. Igor Mitroczuk

Counsellor to the Minister in the Ministry of Economy. For over a decade, he has promoted Baltic amber as a Polish export product and Gdańsk as a global centre for trading this raw material and jewellery made from the „gold of the North”. As Head of the Promotion Department of the Ministry of Economy, he was one of the strongest advocates for including the jewellery and amber industry on the list of 15 sectors which had a chance to receive multi-million euro promotional support from the Ministry of Economy in the years 2011-2014 within the framework of the Operational Programme Innovative Economy (PO IG).
