The book consists of a description of amber recovery throughout history, supplemented by old maps, engravings, photographs, and recent photos showing how amber mining looks today. The core of the publication is dedicated to techniques for extracting amber from marine deposits by fishing with nets and dredgers, as well as with the help of dredgers and divers, and methods for searching for amber on the seashore during and after storms using spades or forks amongst the twigs and seaweed colloquially called "garbage" on the Vistula Spit. The book also includes information on land-based amber mining – shaft mining as well as modern hydrotechnical mining.
The publication was co-funded by: Mikołajczyki Amber Tomasz Mikołajczyk, the Amber Museum in Krakow, the International Amber Association, the Local Tourist Organisation The Amber Coast in Stegna, as well as the organisers of the World Amber Fishing Championships in Jantar.
