I had the idea to make a fountain pen from Baltic amber several years ago. However, I knew how much work it would involve to realise my concept, and perhaps that's exactly why I didn't get started on it before. Until recently, when I received a special commission for a well-known person, and it became my priority for several weeks – recalls Ireneusz Glaza, owner and head designer at CHILLI Jewellery.

Its author's fountain pen will evoke admiration from the layman and deep respect from a professional for the conceptual work and execution. The first challenge was to rethink and create a design that would meet a number of expectations. Above all, the pen had to be ergonomic, functional, elegant, and - as the name suggests - eternal, meaning it should serve the user for many years.

All these conditions have been met. The design was created using computer software, and for its realisation, modern tools were employed in conjunction with excellent goldsmithing skills. These were essential, for instance, for the manual setting of 248 cubic zirconias and the appropriate faceting and setting of 90 amber stones adorning the pen's surface. The scale of the work involved will be better understood by the information that the only elements of the pen not designed and created in the workshop are the 18-carat gold nib and the cartridges.

It’s hard to say how many weeks of intensive work this pen cost me. One thing I know: it was so many that I wouldn’t take on such a challenge a second time – jokes the designer.

A masterpiece has been created – perfect in its proportions, crafted with meticulous attention to the smallest detail, boasting timeless aesthetics, and inspiring admiration for the immense work and jeweller's skill of its creator. The first piece was made in a silver version with cubic zirconia, but it can also be produced in a luxurious version, i.e. with diamonds and in yellow gold.
