Amber masks for the Venice Carnival

A collection of Venetian masks adorned with amber and costumes inspired by the commedia dell'arte by Jola Słoma and Mirek Trymbulak, along with jewellery by Dorota Cenecka, which premiered in Venice this year, is a spectacular farewell from the designers to the theme of carnival in fashion. But not to amber!

Gdynia designers Jola Słoma and Mirek Trymbulak have tackled the theme of Venice Carnival for the third time in their careers – for the first time 20 years ago, when their acquaintance with Venetian mask makers Sergio and Massimo Boldrini inspired them to create the „Venetian Etude” collection. The next instalment of this theme, under the slogan „La Via Dell’ Ambra” (The Amber Route), was presented last year at both ends of the Amber Road – in March in Gdańsk and in May in Venice.

„This year, we decided to close this chapter – dotting the ”i's. The Boldrin brothers created masks, which we then adorned with nuggets of natural, lightly polished amber – I have to admit, the effect exceeded our expectations," explained Mirek Trymbulak.

The masks were a unique addition to the outfits inspired by the Italian commedia dell'arte and the work of the photographic artist Krystyna Andryszkiewicz. The ensemble was completed by jewellery – with amber and other natural stones – by the renowned Gdańsk goldsmith Dorota Cenecka.

Although the artists are bidding farewell to masks and carnival, they are not bidding farewell to Italy, with its diverse inspirations, nor to amber, with which they have been strongly associated since the beginning of their careers as fashion designers. The inspiration for their next collection – for which jewellery will be created by Dorota Cenecka – will be the glass from the island of Murano, captivating with its multitude of colours and diverse shapes. Its premiere has been provisionally scheduled for August this year.

PS. Good news for fans of the „La Via Dell’ Ambra” collection: part of it – both masks and costumes – will be on display at the new premises of Gdańsk’s Amber Museum in the Old Mill, the opening of which is planned for June 2021. All that’s needed is a little patience…
