She devoted her entire professional life to science. After studying geology, she joined the Museum of the Earth of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, where for many years she conducted research on amber and other fossil resins, co-creating one of the most important collections and research bases of its kind in the world. Her oeuvre includes more than 200 publications, including books that have become reference books for subsequent generations of amber researchers and enthusiasts, such as \u201eMysteries of Amber\u201d and \u201ePoland. The Story of Amber\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The range of her scientific interests was exceptionally broad: She conducted research, documenting and comparing fossil and subfossil resins. This work resulted in the accumulation of an extensive collection of IR spectra and the development of spectral characteristics of natural, modified and imitation Baltic amber resins. This research culminated in the \u201eIR Spectral Atlas of the World's Resins\u201d (2015), prepared together with Prof. Norbert Vavra - a publication of exceptional cognitive and practical value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Just as important as her scientific activities was her close cooperation with the amber industry. For many years she participated in the life of the environment, sharing her knowledge and experience. In 1994-2019, together with Wies\u0142aw Gier\u0142owski, she conducted popular science seminars during the AMBERIF fair in Gda\u0144sk, which played an important role in building a dialogue between science and practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her involvement contributed to the creation of the International Amber Association, which she co-initiated and co-founded. She supported creators and researchers, emphasising the importance of authenticity of the material, sound knowledge and respect for the natural properties of Baltic amber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Honoured with the title of Amber of the Century, Prof Barbara Kosmowska-Ceranowicz will be remembered as a person of extraordinary scientific culture, high ethical standards and great authority. She was a demanding and precise researcher, a patient and kind teacher, and a person deeply dedicated to the causes to which she devoted her life. Her passing is a great loss to the world of science and the entire amber community. What remains are the achievements, the memory and the conviction of the immense value of her legacy - both scientific and life.
