Is this a special time for you? Yes. At the end of last year, I started implementing a new business idea aimed at building greater recognition for the Kargul brand on both the Polish and foreign markets. For the last 7 years I have been working for other companies for whom I designed and made jewellery, now I am gradually phasing out this activity and replacing it with production under my own brand. I am also trying to „get out” more from the studio, to make direct contacts, to show myself. I think the timing is also special because I feel as though everything is finally „coming together” for me. And the more it comes together for me, the more energy I have for action, because I feel that this is the path I want to take.

Times are not easy. Are you unconcerned about changing your business model right now?

Against all odds, I think the timing is precisely not bad. The pandemic has also changed the market in a positive sense, because it has cleaned it up. Quite a few jewellery companies have disappeared from it in recent years - both because of the deteriorating economy in general, but also as a result of the decline in interest in Baltic amber products in China. I am also favoured by the worldwide trends prevailing in design and the mentality of young recipients in particular, whom I would like to reach with my jewellery. All this reinforces my conviction that this is, however, a good time for change.

What is the competitive advantage of the Kargul brand?

Above all, it is the idea of a product that is in keeping with its times thanks to a modern, minimalist design and the idea of sustainability, i.e. a production method that does not have a negative impact on the environment. This is made possible by laser technology, in which I duplicate elements through a system of incisions, snaps and tabs to achieve a three-dimensional effect in the jewellery. The laser marks a complete departure from traditional jewellery-making techniques - no casting or etching in acids - but also translates into a high quality of work achievable after just a short training of employees. This all adds up to innovation - and it is this that is my greatest competitive advantage.

Jewellery that is different because of the way it is made.

That's exactly right. For a long time now, I have been looking for solutions that make use of modern technologies to improve the production process. After all, it is difficult to create something new with a hammer, which has been known „forever”, and much easier with new technologies that offer a wide range of new solutions. In 2014, I started using PUK welding machines, which allowed me to move away from casting techniques. At that time, I was producing gold jewellery with Baltic amber, which was very popular, but the cost of producing it was relatively high, which had to be reflected in the price. Throughout this time, I was looking for the best solutions that would allow me to create jewellery that was visually simple yet easy to produce using the latest technology. A piece of jewellery that would fit into the narrative of its time - in my case, the concept of zero waste combining with new technologies. And which will have that „something” that will intrigue the recipient and make them desire it - in my case, it is amber, which I look at slightly differently.

An ambitious jewellery designer can be recognised, among other things, by the fact that he is looking for his own idea of amber.

When it comes to amber, you have to skilfully combine the past with the future, that is, the whole story of amber, its uniqueness, its warm colour and more than 40 million years, with a simple, light, geometry-based design. Most people completely don't expect that amber jewellery can be modern and beautiful and can appeal to them - and here is the surprise effect that I always look forward to and that always comes. Wow! - I often hear from my customers - we don't know amber like this, we like it like this, this is what we want.

They want it because they like the design, amber in jewellery is less important.

Maybe so, but amber has an extraordinary carrying capacity in itself. Let's think that instead of amber we put striped flint or sandstone - they don't have such a rich past, this almost 100 per cent recognition, such a huge baggage of positive associations and warm emotions. And amber has it all. In order for it to „catch on”, you only need to show it in a different way than the traditional one.

You therefore benefit from the surprise effect.

Exactly right.

Have you built your brand and your philosophy on amber alone?

At the moment, yes, because I have noticed its incredible potential, which has been perfectly integrated into my thinking about jewellery. With time, something will probably change in my philosophy, new stones will probably appear, but at the moment amber is the only and most important one. This is largely due to my childhood marked by its presence: I lived - and still live - close to the sea, and since the age of 5 I have been emotionally connected to the Baltic Sea, which I associate with holidays, space, play and childhood freedom. And searching for amber on the beach as a great way to spend time with my parents. These memories are ever-present and amber is the epitome of them. So if I were to get involved with other stones one day, I would also need to feel that closeness I have with amber: to feel good about them, to spend a lot of time in their natural environment, to build some kind of shared history.

One of your necklaces will soon be auctioned at Desa. I have to admit frankly that it surprised me....

Me too... That this the necklace went to auction, I found out completely by accident. It's a 2015 design that was created in a limited number of copies. For me personally, it is very important because I tested some solutions on it, which allowed me to develop and get to where I am now. I am very curious to see how the fate of this necklace will turn out, whether a buyer will be found... I must admit that I am even a little bit proud that it is precisely the necklace made in my workshop that has found its way into the collection of works of jewellery art of the Desa auction house... Regardless of the final outcome of this auction, I am planning to create a collection in cooperation with a well-known artist, which could be exhibited and put up for auction at the auction house.

A jewellery collection?

I wouldn't want to give away too many details at this early stage of the idea... But no, it won't be jewellery, it will be objects that serve both a decorative and practical function. And, of course, with amber. We already have most of the solutions worked out, we are currently devising a promotional strategy. I hope that this collection will contribute to further strengthening the positive image of Baltic amber. I'm starting from a slightly easier position, because a lot has already been done in this area, for example with the films „Workshops of the World - Anna Orska in the Capital of Amber” and the „Gold of the Baltic” series. Especially the latter film made people start looking for amber on the beach, exchanging information on internet forums about which shoes to buy or which torch to use. They collect it mainly for pleasure - and that means they build an emotional bond with it. Amber is already viral, gaining strongly in popularity.

Exactly like you: amber = emotion.

I would very much like us to be guided by good emotions - also in our contact with amber.

The end of the Baltic amber jewellery boom in Asia, the pandemic or inflation did not prevent the designer from deciding to abandon his existing contracts in favour of building his own brand.
