My professional experience is well over 20 years of working with various metals and stones in Poland and abroad. My first contact with amber was when I started working with S&A as a designer jeweller after a few years of „honing my craft” at a jewellery workshop in Germany. 2 years ago I decided to set up my own company because I had a lot of free time and a lot of ideas. So now I have absolutely no time for anything, because I am not only a designer, as I optimistically assumed, but first and foremost a boss (laughs).

But do you still have plenty of ideas?

The thing with jewellery ideas is that sometimes I draw so many in one evening that I don't know where to start, and sometimes nothing sensible comes to mind. Generally, I don't complain about a lack of ideas, but I do complain about a lack of time to realise them. It seems to me that these days it is just as important to have an idea for running a business. It is not enough to exhibit at Amberif and smile nicely at customers (laughs).

Do you like amber?

It's a very graceful stone, and you can „get out of it” in all sorts of ways. I must admit that I had underestimated it a little before. In the meantime, it offers great possibilities and allows you to create objects that are often impossible to make with other stones. And its - already legendary - individualism with an incredible variety of colours. It may sound trivial, but I love the fact that every stone is different - it is truly inspiring. The most „inspiring” thing, however, is the client - in the end, it is the client who decides what will be made of this amber (laughs).

Especially the Chinese client...

I am certainly not the only one who would like to produce what he likes and not what the customer wants. However, life forces you to make compromises - and I have made one with myself: I design what I like, while taking into account the preferences of the customer - invariably, unfortunately, mainly the Chinese.

Unfortunately???

Unfortunately and unfortunately ... The current prices of raw material have severely limited the group of recipients of amber jewellery and we are, in a sense, condemned to customers from the Middle Kingdom. Current amber prices open up new opportunities for amber makers. I myself plan to travel around the world a bit next year and see if I would have something interesting to offer to customers from other markets. Not necessarily with amber - because it introduces a lot of restrictions: not every market will react enthusiastically to this style and these prices. I don't expect that from Europe in any case - at least in the near future. And I don't want to change my style: I want to continue to design and produce jewellery that is in the prestige segment, especially as it is in high demand. I am drawn to other stones and forms. Actually, from the beginning I wanted to design non-amber jewellery at Chilli - only how to show off without amber at Amberif and Ambermart? (laughs)

Thanks to the demands of Chinese customers, amber jewellery has jumped to a higher shelf and is no longer - at least partly - seen in the category of a cheap souvenir. And even if, again, almost all production is on one copy, it is still a much nicer copy than the American one.

The huge interest in amber pushed up its prices sharply, amber started to be set in gold and combined with diamonds - 20 years ago this was absolutely unthinkable. Many manufacturers saw an opportunity for themselves in creating exclusive jewellery with amber, for which a huge demand was born. Although the customer's expectations are changing, I am convinced that they will never give up on amber in this luxurious form. It is a good thing - both for amber and for the industry - that you have to work harder and not just „glue” something to a stone. We have many companies in Poland that can boast of truly excellent design and quality jewellery with top-shelf amber. It is worth supporting them in various ways, as they are the ones who build the image of both the industry and amber. It would be my dream to create for them at the Gdańsk Fair, following the example of the world's leading trade fairs, a separate presentation area under a well-sounding name associated with prestige. I am convinced that everyone would benefit from this - and above all the fair itself.
The fashion for fine amber jewellery is bound to continue as the customer, regardless of country, has become more aware and demanding. Fortunately. This is helped by modern technology - at Chilli, the vast majority of designs are created using 3D technology. Also to make life difficult for companies that do not care to develop their own design line and look for inspiration at other exhibitors' stands....

Is that why it's always the same thing in your showcases at the fair?

At the first trade fair I exhibited at, I wanted to flash my original ideas, but I quickly got over it (laughs). So I display the company's signature designs or competition entries outside to show what I can do. CHILLI's new collections can be seen inside.

Where does CHILLI come from?

Sounds good, doesn't it? (laughs) What I wanted above all was to create a short, distinctive and easy-to-remember name. CHILLI adds flavour to the jewellery (laughs).

Ireneusz Glaza - Jeweller by education, designer by passion. He cooperates with jewellery and amber companies, making designs and ready-made patterns for them. His cooperation with S&A, the largest Polish manufacturer of amber jewellery, resulted in many designs awarded in the Mercurius Gedanensis competition. He is currently successfully creating handmade jewellery based on 3D technologies - since 2016 under his own brand CHILLI.

The amber boom, which has created a huge demand for luxury jewellery with this stone, has proved to be a fantastic opportunity for talented designers and master jewellers.
