The existence of 8 amber deposit zones has been documented, which include 44 occurrence sites and deposits: Klesovskie, Wilne and Vodymyre East. Currently, their reserves are estimated at approximately 135 tons, although experts believe that approximately 950 tons remain in these areas. Other forecasts state that approximately 2700 tons lie in the deposits of the Prypeysky Amber Basin.

The chemical composition of Ukrainian amber is similar to that of deposits in Yantarny. Its constant component is sulfur (at least 1%).

The predominant colored varieties are: light yellow, yellow, yellow-orange and red. In addition to the traditional range of colors, Ukrainian amber also comes in green. Based on the analysis, it was determined that the greenish-yellow, pale-green, and yellow-green varieties account for about 12% deposits. Researchers from the PAN Museum of Earth in Warsaw determined that the light yellow-green varieties of amber from the Klesovoye deposit are unique (Certificate № 1/96 dated August 27, 1996).

The amber deposits are found in layers at a depth of 3 to 9.5 m, and in some cases – up to 15 m. Most of the amber fragments found there – 40-70% – are those weighing 5-500 g; smaller ones are 2-5 g (20-30%) and below 2 g (10-20%).

Extraction

The industrial extraction of amber in Ukraine began in 1993 following the establishment of the state-owned company Bursztyn Ukrainy for the extraction and processing of amber, based in the city of Rovno. The average extraction volume at that time was 2.5–3 tons per year and took place on the Puchacz klesowskie deposit section. From 2009 to 2012, no industrial extraction was carried out. From mid-2013, a private company, Centrum „Słoneczne Rzemiosło”, began industrial extraction of amber in the Wołodymyrec Wschodni deposit. Also in the summer of 2013, Bursztyn Ukrainy resumed industrial extraction of the ore in the Klesowskie deposit. Currently, it is only Bursztyn Ukrainy and Centrum „Słoneczne Rzemiosło” that have special permits for the extraction of amber in Ukraine.

Amber mining in Ukraine in 2004-2013

Year

Extraction in kg

Year

Extraction in kg

2004

2644

2010

0

2005

2230

2011

0

2006

2950

2012

0

2007

2125

2013

2300

2008

2442

2009

1088

The export of amber from Ukraine is legally permitted; however, it is a prerequisite to document the legal purchase of the product. Information about the documents required to obtain permission for the export of amber can be obtained at customs offices.

Illegal extraction

Over the past decade, illegal amber mining has taken on a massive scale, especially using powerful motor pumps. According to the assessment of law enforcement agencies, illegal mining exceeds the output of the company Bursztyn Ukrainy by more than 6 times, reaching 10-15 tons. The illegally mined amber is collected by intermediary companies or individual persons who transfer it outside the borders of Ukraine through smuggling channels.

Data from the Równeński State Administration indicate that as a result of illegal activity, more than 300 hectares of land were destroyed. Decades will be needed to rehabilitate it.

In the face of the complex internal situation in Ukraine, as well as the very high price increases for amber ore, attempts were made to reorganize the illegal mining market. In early May 2014, a group of armed men who came from several regions of Ukraine attempted to take control of the Sarne region of the Rivne region, where residents also engaged in illegal mining. The attempt to take control of these areas ended in a shootout; the attackers burned the cars. In other regions, fights between different groups of illegal miners also occur sporadically.

Attempts at change

In 2010 a draft law was submitted to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine About amber, The bill proposed simplifying the procedure for obtaining special permits for the extraction of amber on non-industrial land. In the first reading, the bill was adopted, but expert committees of individual ministries rejected it due to certain inconsistencies with existing legal norms. Opponents of the bill argued that it would favor the emergence of non-competitive relations in the sphere of transferring deposits to interested parties, as well as it would not guarantee the rational use of deposits and their protection. It is for these reasons that the bill About amber it was rejected.

The Ukrainian authorities have undertaken another attempt to introduce significant changes in the field of amber mining. Lawyers and parliamentarians are currently working on a concept for its legalization. These efforts began in the last weeks of May and it is too early to speak of any results. A strategy for the development of the amber industry is also being discussed as part of the The nationwide program for the development of Ukraine’s mineral and raw material base for the years up to 2030.

After the suspension of the export of amber ore from the world's largest deposit in Yantarny in Russia, interest in Ukrainian succinite deposits is growing.

After the suspension of the export of amber ore from the world's largest deposit in Yantarny in Russia, interest in Ukrainian succinite deposits is growing.
[1
["post-16949","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-informacje
["GET
