Last autumn, the company won the online competition Jewel of Polish Jewellery.

You have won numerous competitions on the theme of amber - is this a conscious choice?
Marek Mikicki: Initially, I entered non-amber jewellery in competitions held at Amberif, but I had little chance of winning prizes. Yes, I was patted on the shoulder and congratulated, my ideas and workmanship were impressive, but that was the end of it. So I took advantage of the fact that it was, after all, an amber fair, and presented amber in a slightly different form with a different material in the setting. This turned out to be the right decision, although in general, polishing and setting amber is not my day job. The company I run specialises in white and yellow gold jewellery with synthetic stones, and I am only an amateur in amber processing.

The number of awards won seems to contradict this....
I make works decorated with amber only for competitions which have this beautiful stone in the theme. They are created only for the given theme, they are strongly „polished”, but I make them only in one copy. If I decided to produce and sell these designs, I would have to modify them slightly beforehand. And anyway, their usefulness would be limited, if only due to the fact that amber is a soft material and is easily damaged compared to, for example, white gold, which usually accompanies it in my product. The weight of my pieces is also a considerable production problem. For the time being, however, I am not thinking of putting these designs into production. Especially as this would involve an enormous amount of work and, consequently, a rather high final price. For example, just making the „Modern Lady” ring took me fourteen days of work of about nine hours a day. This is not counting the time spent designing and preparing the raw materials.

Does this mean that these prize-winning works then wander “into a drawer”?
For now, yes. When there are a few more of them, I might be able to organise a permanent exhibition on the occasion of a larger exhibition.

Have you not thought about selling these designs?
I have had several such offers from large companies so far, but I have not accepted them. I have been running the company on my own for three years, although my experience in the jewellery industry is much broader - previously, with a partner, I ran the Aurum company for 12 years and, still going back, gained experience for another six years. Now I am primarily concerned with developing my own image, name and growing my business. Fortunately, I have enough good ideas for now and I don't need to sell designs. I simply don't want to be associated with another company.

Your designs - not only those decorated with amber - are eye-catching in their sophisticated design and perfection of workmanship.
I design and make the patterns myself. This makes it all the more pleasing that my designs do not go unnoticed. I try to make them distinctive and well-crafted enough to remain in the memory of those who view them. This helps a lot in building a positive corporate image. Referring to your question about exquisite design and perfect workmanship, these are areas in the art of goldsmithing that highlight the uniqueness of the work and the expertise of the craftsman. It was a great honour for me to receive congratulations and words of appreciation from Professor Szadkowski of the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź when, last year at the Amberif fair, my necklace „Two Faces” won first place in the Mercurius Gedanensis competition.

Are these designs ideal for you or would you like to change something about them?
During the course of my work, I try to create the perfect pattern, perfect according to my imagination and design, but once the final work is created, I always feel unsatisfied and this stimulates me to keep looking for new inspirations and solutions. That is why every new competition is a new challenge for me.

Marek Mikicki is a multiple winner in the Mercurius Gedanensis, Amber in Crafts and Gold and Silver in Crafts competitions and most recently Jewel of Polish Jewellery.

Marek Mikicki is a multiple winner in the Mercurius Gedanensis, Amber in Crafts and Gold and Silver in Crafts competitions and most recently Jewel of Polish Jewelry

118

245
post-12445","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-wywiady","sekcja-ludzie-opinie
["GET
