At the time, Maria Milewicz-Brauer was presenting a small collection, but one that was big enough to inspire many people. I know this from conversations with „seeking” artists who made no secret of their admiration, but no one took it further and used it in their work. It was different with me: I met the artist in person, she once brought me some fleece and showed me how to make felt. Through trial and error, I came to some of my own solutions.

Is felt a graceful material?
I like felt as a material very much because it offers different colour possibilities and blends very well with amber. I am currently making both simple forms involving embedding amber in felt and fuller, more designer compositions with amber and metal. It's like playing with colours depending on the type and shade of amber. Although actually making felt is very hard work - you have to acquire new manual skills adapted to this particular material. It was the same with linen and with jute strings that I used to use. Felt is a friendly material for amber, both are warm. I'm happy it came up Maria, because it has inspired more than one person.

What made you curious about this material, after all it is quite common?
Felt has a very deep historical tradition. The Scandinavians used it to make clothing. Nomadic and Mongolian nomadic tribes built yurts - the material was impervious to water and kept them warm. The ancients strung beads, bone ornaments etc. onto the felt strings. Highland trousers are also made of felt - I've even thought about going to the mountains to find materials with natural colours. I'm also interested in dyeing - in the past I've dyed jute cords, silks and cotton myself, which I've used in my older work. However, the wool fleece I use to make my felt I already get in ready-made colours.
It turns out that there is a whole culture of felting - I found a lot of information about it on the Internet. In Poland, there is a well-known fashion designer Beata Jarmołowska, who presented beautiful creations at the Amberif Fashion and Jewellery Gala in 2006. I was enchanted by her fancy hats, which featured felt elements that blended perfectly with the whole outfit. Also well-known in our circles, Zuzanna Bartecka, whose creations we also had the pleasure of seeing at the Gala, has been designing collections of garments made of felted materials for several years. Most artists working in this material live in the USA, Germany and Norway. Courses to learn felting are offered in these countries. An interesting fact is that in the West, working with felt helps people with cerebral palsy - colour therapy has amazing effects. The colours heal and also the manual skills of the disabled are activated through these activities. Meanwhile, felt is currently undervalued in Poland; it is used to polish amber. However, I wonder about the possibility of introducing it into industrial production.

I fear that felt will only gain acceptance in artistic jewellery; in industrial jewellery it may not succeed, as the associations with this material are not the best.
And that is a pity, because it is a very graceful and very durable material. It may not have a very good reputation, but that is because so little is still known about it in Poland. Personally, I like to challenge myself and discover new materials. If I have piqued anyone's interest in this material, I warmly invite you to have a great time.

The well-known artist from Gdansk talks about her fascination with felt.
